'Lifeskills', 'Second Steps', and 'Kelso's Choice'
Garfield Cheetahs are:
Responsible, Respectful, and Ready!
Garfield's Lifeskills program emphasizes the skills that everyone needs in order to be effective community members. The lifeskills include friendship, caring, cooperation, flexibility, initiative, perseverance, courage, responsibility, common sense, problem solving, integrity, effort, patience, organization, sense of humor, and curiosity.
Our students learn personal coping skills through Second Steps. We role play and engage in games These simple and fun brain-building games strengthen executive-function skills and social, emotional learning. They are designed to boost children’s skills for paying attention and controlling their behavior.

Attendance
Regular, prompt attendance will help your child keep up with class work.our learning community works best when we are all present. Our school day is from 8:40 to 3:02. If you arrive after the bell you need to check in at the office before coming to class.A good nights sleep and a good breakfast and lunch will help your child have a productive day. Please send a note if your child's after-school routine changes. Call the office to report an absence and to notify the school of any changes in your contact information. As much as we want your child at school, please keep your child home if he/she is ill.
Drop Off/Pick Up
The playground is supervised starting 8:20 am.On rainy days students are supervised in the gym Students are welcomed into the classroom at 8:35 am and class begins at 8:40am.
If you need to pick up your child early, please check in at the office and they will call down to release your child. It is helpful for families to wait in the office rather than enter the learning PODS during the day. children are busy focused on learning and seeing family members through the glass windows and doors that line our rooms is very distracting to all the children. if your child is to be picked up by someone else or is going home in a different way, a note must be sent with your signature and the date. If there is a last minute change, please be sure to call the school office. (596-6900). If we have not received a note or call, your child will be sent home in the usual way.
Items From Home
Money or notes sent to school should be sent in an envelope labeled with your child's name, teacher's name, and purpose for the money on the outside.
To avoid lost or broken toys please keep all toys at home. Special items may be requested in writing by the teacher.
Backpacks and Folders
Please have your child bring his/her backpack to school daily. Check the backpack and remove any papers or return indicated papers. Students will have a homework folder that will carry homework and mail to and from class. These folders should be returned daily to keep our line of communication current.
Snacks
Our classes will have a daily snack provided by families. We rely on parent contributions. Each student brings a snack item once a month (enough for 25 students). If we run out we will let you know. The Olympia School District has adopted a "healthy snack policy". Please avoid sugary treats. Ideas include: cut up fruit, fruit cups, eggies/dip, yogurt, crackers, cheese, cereal bars, etc. If your child has allergies, please provide his/her own snack (labeled) and also contact me so I am aware of the allergy. PLEASE DO NOT SEND NUT PRODUCTS (READ LABELS). WE HAVE STUDENTS WITH NUT ALLERGIES AND THIS CAN BE VERY SERIOUS.
BIRTHDAYS
The children's birthdays will be recognized with a simple birthday routine. You are welcome to bring a store bought treat (something that doesn't require cutting). Some ideas are: frozen juice bars, yogurt sticks, or mini muffins. No balloons or birthday "party" activities please. To avoid hurt feelings, please do not hand out party invitations at school unless all students in the class are invited. A school phone directory is available through the PTA if you would like to contact families. If your family does not celebrate birthdays, please let us know so that we can be respectful of your family's beliefs and traditions.
Homework
At Garfield we know that parent involvement is an important part of student success. Homework will sent home Monday through Thursday. Your child will be receiving a homework folder with directions on how we use them. This folder should go back and forth everyday in your child's backpack. The homework is to reinforce and practice skills presented in class. Please read with and to your child every day. Your participation and support will help him/her be a successful Garfield cheetah!
